One tap sends your GPS location and a help message to your trusted contacts by SMS — no internet, no login, no delay. Built for real emergencies on real Android phones.
✅ Free for life — no subscriptionMost "safety apps" are built for a scenario that doesn't match what emergencies look like in real life. They assume you have a data connection. They assume you have time to open a menu. They assume you remembered to sign in. RedShield SOS is built around the opposite assumption: the moment it's needed most, the network will be struggling, your battery will be low, and you will have approximately one second to act.
The app uses SMS — not a server, not an internet notification, not a third-party relay — to send a location-stamped alert to the people you've chosen as trusted contacts. SMS works in areas where data fails. SMS works when battery-saving mode has killed background processes. SMS works when everything else has stopped.
The alert message is customisable. It can be in any of the 14 supported languages. It includes your GPS coordinates in a Google Maps–compatible format so the recipient can tap directly through to your location.
Understanding the sequence helps you configure the app for your situation and trust that it will work when you need it.
Open RedShield SOS. Add at least one trusted contact — a family member, a friend, someone who picks up the phone. Write or customise your SOS message. Choose which trigger method fits your situation. This stage is the most important, and it only has to be done once.
Activate the SOS by whichever method you configured: tap the big SOS button, shake the phone sharply, let the inactivity timer fire automatically, or use the scheduled check-in system. The app does not require you to open it, unlock it, or be looking at the screen.
The app grabs your GPS coordinates as quickly as your phone's hardware allows. On most phones this takes under two seconds for a coarse fix and four to eight seconds for a precise one. The app sends the best available fix — it doesn't wait indefinitely if GPS is struggling.
The alert is sent via SMS to every trusted contact in your list. The message includes your location, a Google Maps link, the trigger method used (so your contact knows how serious to treat the alert), and a timestamp. If the first SMS attempt fails, the app retries up to three times with automatic delay between attempts.
Your trusted contact gets a standard SMS — no app needed on their side, no account, no special phone. They tap the Maps link, see where you are, and decide how to respond. The simplicity on the receiving end is deliberate: the message should be readable and actionable by anyone, on any phone, even basic feature phones.
Every alert is recorded in the app's SOS History with a full timeline: when it was triggered, what location data was captured, which contacts received the SMS, and whether delivery was confirmed. You can review the history any time, which also helps you test the app and confirm it's working before you actually need it.
You can configure RedShield SOS to watch for any combination of the following trigger types. Each one is designed for a different scenario where reaching a touchscreen normally is difficult or impossible.
A large, hard-to-miss button on the home screen. One tap triggers immediately. No swipe-to-confirm delay by default — speed matters more than accidental-trigger protection in most scenarios.
Shake the phone sharply three times to trigger. Works with the screen locked and the app in the background. Sensitivity is adjustable so you don't fire accidentally while jogging.
Set a timer. If you don't check in by tapping the notification before the timer expires, an automatic SOS fires. Useful for solo travel, late-night walks, or any situation where someone else should know if you go quiet.
Schedule a check-in for a specific time. If you don't confirm you're safe by that time, the SOS sends automatically. Good for pre-planned higher-risk situations like solo treks.
Press the power button rapidly five times to trigger SOS while the phone is locked. No need to unlock, open the app, or find the button — works with hands that are shaking or constrained.
Configure time windows (overnight, for example) where inactivity triggers are suppressed. This prevents false alarms while you're asleep without disabling the manual and shake triggers.
Many safety apps work fine in testing and fail in the field because OEM manufacturers — Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei — all implement aggressive battery-saving modes that kill background processes after a few minutes of screen-off time. RedShield SOS is built specifically to survive these restrictions.
The app uses a persistent foreground service (the notification you see in the status bar when protection is active), a dual-path alarm system that combines Android's standard AlarmManager with JobScheduler as a fallback, device-specific deep-link shortcuts to the OEM's battery exemption settings, and an adaptive watchdog that detects when the device is throttling the app and compensates automatically.
This is the main reason RedShield SOS exists as a native Kotlin app rather than a web wrapper: the reliability work is entirely in the platform layer, and it cannot be replicated in a browser or a hybrid framework.
The full app interface — every button, every warning, every configuration screen — is available in all 14 languages listed below. Language switching is instant and does not require a restart.
RedShield SOS has been downloaded and used by a wide range of people. The most common use cases reported by users include:
The app has also been shared with hospitals, NGOs focused on women's safety, and local government contacts in Tamil Nadu for inclusion in personal safety awareness programmes. Distribution to organisations for non-commercial use is free — write to azhagiri.praba@gmail.com if you are interested.
RedShield SOS is available on Google Play for all Android devices running Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later. It is free to download and free to use, permanently. There is no premium version, no subscription tier, and no feature locked behind a payment.
